She lifted her head and gazed up at the world.
And she smiled.
She smiled because she did not know how to tell the world
she was hurting.
She smiled because she could not express all that
she was feeling.
She smiled because she was told that she should.
She smiled because she thought it might help her
ignore the aching of her soul.
She smiled because it cost her less than
facing the truth.
She smiled and smiled until smiling became
synonymous with pain.
And everyone told her how good it was that she was smiling.
So she covered her sorrow and smiled all the more.
“Laughter can conceal a heavy heart, but when the laughter ends, the grief remains.” Proverbs 14:13
